Airo Mail vs Rational

Let’s be upfront: these are not the same kind of product, and if you’re weighing one against the other as a straight swap, the answer is almost always “neither replaces the other.”

Rational (YC S26) sells AI employees for accounting teams. It runs recurring accounts payable, close, reconciliation and document follow-up work around the systems a firm already uses. Invoices, receipts, statements and client emails come in; Rational applies your rules, prepares a review packet with the source and the reasoning attached, and stops at anything unusual, material or policy-sensitive so a named person decides. It’s sold through a demo, rolled out one controlled workflow at a time. Underneath, it isn’t a frontier model with a prompt on top: Rational describes a proprietary hybrid architecture pairing a deterministic tax engine with a fine-tuned model, and publishes its own run of the third-party TaxCalcBench tax-return benchmark to back it.

Airo Mail is an AI email client. It works on your inbox: AutoFile proposes an action on every message, Plate pins the next move to each thread, and it tracks the real-world things buried in your mail — follow-ups, packages, trips, calendar conflicts. Airo also lets you attach an email address on your own domain to an AI agent, so mail to support@yourcompany.com gets handled by an agent instead of by you.

Here’s the sharpest way to see the difference. Describing its work with a Fortune Global 500 customer, Rational says it moved invoice follow-up, close coordination, approvals and audit trails out of inboxes. That is the opposite of Airo’s bet: Airo assumes the work is going to keep arriving by email, and makes the inbox the place it gets handled. Same enemy — the chasing — opposite strategy.

The Trade-offs

Choose Airo Mail if the problem is your inbox. You open your mail in the morning and there are two hundred messages, six of which matter, and the other one hundred and ninety-four still have to be dealt with one at a time. AutoFile proposes an action on every message so you clear the noise in one pass, Plate pins the next move to each thread, and Airo tracks the things you’d otherwise forget — the follow-up nobody chased, the package, the trip, the double-booked hour. You sign up, connect Gmail, and it’s working in minutes.

Choose Rational if the problem is capacity on an accounting or finance team. Invoices need coding, the close needs chasing, reconciliations need preparing, and clients need reminding about documents they haven’t sent. Rational takes the recurring version of that work, prepares it to the point where a person only has to decide, and stops at anything unusual or policy-sensitive. Its published customer numbers are operational rather than personal — around 12,000 invoices per cycle at a Fortune Global 500 customer, around 20 hours a week per person at Tenace International. That’s a different purchase entirely, with a different buyer and a sales conversation attached.

The Honest Bottom Line

These are not substitutes, and we’re not going to pretend otherwise. Airo is an email app; Rational is an AI workforce for a specific profession. If you’re an accounting firm partner comparing the two, you’re probably comparing the wrong two things — Rational’s competition is other accounting-AI vendors and the cost of hiring, not an inbox client.

Where they genuinely rhyme is the control model. Both refuse to be fully autonomous, and for the same reason: the cost of a confident mistake is higher than the cost of a human tap. Airo proposes an action on every email and waits for you. Rational prepares the packet and stops at the approval gate, with the source, the rule applied and the reviewer’s decision kept together. Two products built a year apart, in different markets, landed on the same answer — propose, don’t act.

The strategies diverge completely on where the work should live. Rational’s pitch is that routine finance work does not belong in an inbox at all, and its customer story is explicitly about moving follow-up, approvals and audit trails out of email. Airo’s bet is the opposite: mail is where the work arrives whether you like it or not, so the inbox should be the place it gets resolved. Neither is wrong — they’re right about different work. Structured, recurring, high-volume, auditable work should leave the inbox. Ad-hoc human correspondence never will.

So an accounting firm can reasonably run both: Rational on the AP queue and the close, Airo on the partners’ own inboxes. They never touch the same job. We publish this page because people search for it, not because we think we’d win that bake-off. We wouldn’t. We’re also not in it.
